Natural and artificial
It seems to be part of human nature to constantly want to improve ourselves and our environment. This ambition has made our lives more comfortable in many ways. At times, however, we overshoot the mark and conclude that it is time to return to our roots.

Take plastic, for example. It became apparent in the course of time that its invention not only opened up many new possibilities, but also caused massive environmental problems.
Several years ago, I read the following statement in an interview with a doctor: “The future of medicine lies somewhere between high-tech and natural medicine.” This sentence has stayed with me ever since, popping up in countless contexts. This is because it holds a general truth: the best solutions are usually neither purely natural nor overly far-fetched. What is needed is invariably the right balance between the natural and the artificial.
Finding the optimal degree of artificial optimisation is a major challenge in every area. Zeitgeist, technological developments and legal frameworks all play an important role here. Our Dossier “Natural and artificial” is dedicated to research projects that aim to strike the right balance between high-tech and natural approaches. I hope you enjoy reading it.
